Rosie Says: Treat Your Skin Right In 2017!

2017 has arrived and in the spirit of the new year it’s a great time to form new habits that will strength your dedication to caring for your skin. Here are 8 steps you can take for better skin this year.

Moisturize After Showering

We all know a warm shower strips skin of oils. Face and body lotions are excellent substitutes. Keep your body lotion right in the shower. Seeing it will remind you to apply it when your skin is damp, within ten minutes of turning off the water. PCA Body Therapy contains 12% lactic acid and is suitable for all skin types and conditions leaving the skin hydrated, smooth and radiant.

Wear Sunscreen Every Day

Doctors have long advised wearing sunscreen daily (at least SPF 30) and reapplying it often. Forming a daily habit of applying sunscreen is your greatest defense in the fight against the aging. You can choose from many PCA sunscreens including one of my favorites Weightless Protection Broad Spectrum SPF 45. It’s unique quick-absorbing and light finish makes it ideal for those who dislike the feel of traditional sunscreen products.

Develop a Routine

You've known since middle school that makeup can mix with skin oils and dirt to cause zits. Cosmetics can also trap skin-damaging free radicals that float in the air. Cleansing the day away is so important to your skin care routine, if you don’t do anything else, don’t skip that. Use PCA Facial Wash or Creamy Cleanser to establish this routine. In time, you’ll see the results.

Clean Up After the Gym

Don't let your skin take a hit just because you've discovered an amazing new workout. Wipe your face, back, and chest after class, and change into a clean, dry T-shirt. Back home, hop into the shower as soon as possible.

Book a Yearly Mole Check

Having a dermatologist survey your body once a year is crucial, even if you're diligent about monthly self-exams.

Exfoliate Regularly

A baby's skin replenishes itself completely every 14 days, but by age 30, an adult takes a full 28 days to replenish. With all that extra time, skin cells have a chance to dry out and lose luster—unless you jump-start the renewal process by exfoliating. Use PCA Gentle Exfoliant weekly to help rejuvenate your skin.

Stick with the Program

Waiting for a new skin treatment to show results can be a test of patience. A good corrective skin care regime including a serum and/or a retinol can take six weeks to give noticeable results, so don't give up. That goes for skin lighteners and acne products, too. So give it a chance to show results before you move on. Schedule your consultation and get started on your personal beauty routine that will set you up for a lifetime of great skin.

Schedule Time for Yourself

That extra step of in-office treatments can make all the difference in the results you see. Working from a thorough consultation and taking into consideration if you are looking for a change in your skin or a healthy maintenance plan. Peels, Masks and Facial appointment recommendations will vary from every 3 to 4 weeks to sometimes seasonally, depending on the end goal. Whatever the suggestion, consistency is what it takes.

How To: Beachy Waves with Kaliope

Kaliope is showing us all how to create the best beachy waves with a little help from some of our favorite Kevin.Murphy products!

Products used:

-Start by prepping the hair at the root with Kevin Murphy's Anti Gravity Gel.
-Then work Hair Resort Cream into the mid shaft and ends starting from the bottom and working up.
-Rough dry completely focusing on building volume at the roots.
-Section off the front from the back like a head band that runs from one ear to the other.
-Depending on density, divide the back horizontally into 3-4 sections.
-Spray with heat protection.
-Taking vertical sections carefully wrap the hair around the flat iron twirling way from the face for a windblown effect.
-Continue up the head lifting at the root to create volume at the crown.-When moving into the front take slightly diagonal sections. Switch it up by curling the pieces behind the ears forward to break up curls that tend to clump into one mega curl around the face. This also gives is a less perfect look.

-Set with a beach spray like Hair Resort Spray and lightly comb through with your fingers or a wide tooth comb. Follow with Session Spray for additional hold if needed.

Don't forget to tag us (@shinesalonclt & #shinesalonclt) on social media to show us your waves!

Rosie Says: Waxing 101

There are some waxing basics that everyone needs to know when planning to go hairless this summer.

1. Check the length of your hair. The best length for waxing is generally 1/2 to 3/4 of an inch. This is about 3 weeks of growth.

2. Exfoliate. Use a loofah, exfoliating cream or washcloth and rub in circular motions. You want to remove any dead skin cells that may clog the hair follicle and cause ingrown hairs. Avoid irritating your skin by rubbing too hard. Don't exfoliate the day you wax. It will only cause more sensitivity and redness.

Avoid waxing when skin is more sensitive. It's best not to wax when your skin has had a lot of sun exposure or when you have used aggressive skin care products (such as AHA or retinoid treatments).

Give your skin about a week after any of these before you wax.

3. Consider a pain reliever. Taking an oral anti-inflammatory about an hour before waxing will not only keep the skin from swelling, but it will also alleviate some of the pain associated with waxing. This is optional and at your discretion. Some salons also sell topical pain relievers that you can spray or rub onto the skin. These take a minimum of 15 minutes to start working. If they are oily at all, you will need to cleanse your skin again before waxing.

4. Stay out of the sun 24 hours before and after your waxing service.

5. Moisturize your skin again after waxing and avoid sun. Freshly waxed skin burns more easily.

Rosie

Shine Salon and the Habitat Metrolina ReStores

Shine Salon and the Habitat Metrolina ReStores

Shine Salon is expanding and bought the adjacent lot. Soon, there will be more parking for the Shine family. But we can't forget about the existing structure on the lot. The Portal, the store/house stood on the lot for a long time, and was in need of more love (and repairs) than we could provide.

We teamed up with the Habitat Metrolina ReStores deconstruction program to salvage the home, sending what was salable (cabinets, sinks, home decor items) to the Charlotte Habitat ReStore. The items will be kept out of the landfill, put to good (re)use and will help raise funds to further Habitat's home building programs.
Check out a behind scenes peek!

Rosie Says: Shine This Holiday Season

Here it comes….the holiday season is fast approaching. It is a wonderful time of the year with celebrations galore.  While the goal most likely is to sparkle and shine, the added stress of longer lists and endless obligations can leave us feeling and looking worn out. Good skin does not typically come naturally; it tends to come along with dedication and following a good skin care routine without fail.

Before this ball gets rolling, let’s make a plan.

Start with the obvious….use a sunscreen such as PCA Perfecting Protection.

The sun is your skin’s worst enemy. It zaps it of moisture, it makes it look old, it instigates wrinkles and lines, it causes dark spots and it just makes your skin look bad. You can pretty much bet that skin that looks healthy, young and fresh is being protected from the damaging effects of the sun every single day, regardless of the weather. If you forgo a good UVA and UVB sun protectant, you’re just asking for weathered-looking skin.

Get a good night’s sleep.

While we sleep, our skin is hard at work to repair and rejuvenate itself—and it does its best work at
night. Staying up too late impedes your skin’s normal functionality, which is why it can look tired, dull and puffy come morning. Plan around those parties and as much as you can, go to sleep at the same time and make sure you get at least eight hours. This will help keep your skin looking refreshed.

Use a retinol such as PCA Intensive Brightening Treatment 0.05% Retinol.

One of the best things you can do for your skin is to use a retinol every single night to help slow the
aging process. Not only do retinols speed up cell turnover, but they also help to stimulate collagen
production for skin that’s plump, smooth and glowing.

Hydrate your skin with a moisturizer such as PCA Collagen Hydrator.

Hydration is one of the key components for great skin. If you don’t moisturize your skin (make sure to always use a moisturizer that is compatible with your skin type and skin needs), your skin looks dry and lines and wrinkles can become accentuated. Well-hydrated skin allows for your makeup to go on that much smoother, too.

Visit your Aesthetician (that’s me) for a PCA Peel, Mask or Facial treatment

Your skin naturally sheds dead skin cells, but with age, that process starts to slow down and your skin needs a little help. That’s where exfoliation comes in. Your aesthetician will do this by prescribing the best treatment for you to remove those dead skin cells. This is the key to skin that’s bright, evenly toned and able to properly reflect light.

Follow these simple steps and let yourself shine.

Till next time,
Rosie

Product Spotlight: Techni Art Next Day Hair

Let's talk product!

The new products from L'Oreal Professional have arrived and we at Shine, have become OBSESSED with Next Day Hair.

I always love my hair on day 2. A little bit of grit and a lot more texture. Next Day Hair gives us all of this in just a couple of sprays. Although it has a light hold, its formulated with mineral salt to give a textured look making it ideal for any hair type. You can use as little or as much as you prefer.

I've experimented with this product a bit and have come to love using it on those soft, fine hair clients that are looking for a bit more volume and some definition as well as something that they can reactivate through the day. Use it at the root or all over. You can spray Next Day Hair and use the blow dryer going up the hair strand in order to get big hair results or sleek it back into a textured pony. There really is no wrong way to use this product, the key is to just have fun with it!

Rosie Says: A Visit to the Esthetician Is Important!

Isn’t time to stop guessing?

How many times have you made a visit to the department store or the drug store looking for a new skin care item only to be overwhelmed by to many choices or the wrong advice? So you take a chance and buy something with hopes it will work, only to add it to the pile of unused product and lost dollars. We have all been there.

Enter the job of your personal esthetician. I love my career because it’s my privilege to get to know you. When you come in for a service, any service, it becomes my job to listen to you. The questions I ask you are not only about your skin but the other factors that contribute to its well-being. By understanding your activity level, sun exposure, ancestry, medical history, etc., I can then make informed suggestions that will benefit your desire to look your best.

So talk to me. Talk to me about your skin care challenges, your desire for improvement and/or maintaining healthy skin at any age. This gives us a chance to discuss your goals and expectations for the first visit, and long term goals for the future. Let me help you take the confusion out of your skin care.

In addition, as an esthetician, I am trained to recognize early signs of many medical conditions affecting the skin, and will refer you to a dermatologist in such a case. We often work together with
complimenting services.
Don’t let it be said that one of your biggest regrets is lack of care you gave your skin. It’s time to stop
guessing.

Olaplex: Knock Offs or Knock Out ?

We love Olaplex, a single ingredient chemistry, that is free of silicone or oils, that links broken bonds in the hair during and after chemical services making them stronger than they were before.

From the American Board of Certified Haircolorists March 2015 Newsletter :

"We have now heard of 10 brands worldwide entering the category. It's easy to understand with Olaplex growing to a reported 70,000 salons in the USA in 6 months...

After many of my members emailed and asked my opinion... I decided to obtain samples and conduct my own independent tests to find out the truth and save my members and others from walking into a snake pit. I once had my own doubts about Olaplex. I even expressed the opinion that Olaplex was a rip-off. But after using the product for many months, I know that the chemistry is real and that you can do more as a colorist with Olaplex then without Olaplex. This is good for everyone in the color business.

I took four hair swatches from the same ponytail and bleached them using Blondor and 40 volume for 50 minutes for maximum effect. I followed each manufacturer's instructions precisely. The photograph below is after four shampoos. colorpHlex is on the far left, next is good old fashioned mineral oil, b3 Brazilian Bond Builder is next, and Olaplex on the far right.

I will say that after the first two shampoos, all of the swatches were in pretty good condition and it was difficult to tell the difference. The b3 and the Mineral Oil left the hair most shiny after the first shampoo which made me very curious. But after the fourth shampoo, it was clear that the other products were not holding up and seemed to prove to be nothing more than oil and silicone. They were only temporarily coating the hair thus creating an immediate shine, but unable to build or link broken bonds with any degree of quality. The hair felt dry and fragile. At best, they would be better served to call it an additive for shine. Anything more is a far stretch of the imagination. The Olaplex sample maintained its integrity and was the clear winner. We also performed similar tests on live models and Olaplex was always noticeably and significantly superior. The more compromised the hair was, the more Olaplex outperformed the rest.

What concerns me is that they are making the same claims as Olaplex. They do not achieve what Olaplex does. I was so impressed with the results I had to call Dean Christal himself to ask what Olaplex had that the others do not? He said, "We have a real Chemistry that has multiple patents in the works." It must be so because in my long career I have never seen anything that has worked as well as Olaplex.

The rapid growth of Olaplex is also proof that I am not the only one that is seeing the difference. It would be a shame to see a bunch of knock off brands hurt this category that is becoming so important to colorists around the world. These are just my opinions from tests that I have conducted. I encourage everyone to do the same.

Andre "

All of this boils down to one thing, Olaplex is a knockout!
