How To: Beachy Waves with Kaliope

Kaliope is showing us all how to create the best beachy waves with a little help from some of our favorite Kevin.Murphy products!

Products used:

-Start by prepping the hair at the root with Kevin Murphy's Anti Gravity Gel.
-Then work Hair Resort Cream into the mid shaft and ends starting from the bottom and working up.
-Rough dry completely focusing on building volume at the roots.
-Section off the front from the back like a head band that runs from one ear to the other.
-Depending on density, divide the back horizontally into 3-4 sections.
-Spray with heat protection.
-Taking vertical sections carefully wrap the hair around the flat iron twirling way from the face for a windblown effect.
-Continue up the head lifting at the root to create volume at the crown.-When moving into the front take slightly diagonal sections. Switch it up by curling the pieces behind the ears forward to break up curls that tend to clump into one mega curl around the face. This also gives is a less perfect look.

-Set with a beach spray like Hair Resort Spray and lightly comb through with your fingers or a wide tooth comb. Follow with Session Spray for additional hold if needed.

Don't forget to tag us (@shinesalonclt & #shinesalonclt) on social media to show us your waves!

Rosie Says: Waxing 101

There are some waxing basics that everyone needs to know when planning to go hairless this summer.

1. Check the length of your hair. The best length for waxing is generally 1/2 to 3/4 of an inch. This is about 3 weeks of growth.

2. Exfoliate. Use a loofah, exfoliating cream or washcloth and rub in circular motions. You want to remove any dead skin cells that may clog the hair follicle and cause ingrown hairs. Avoid irritating your skin by rubbing too hard. Don't exfoliate the day you wax. It will only cause more sensitivity and redness.

Avoid waxing when skin is more sensitive. It's best not to wax when your skin has had a lot of sun exposure or when you have used aggressive skin care products (such as AHA or retinoid treatments).

Give your skin about a week after any of these before you wax.

3. Consider a pain reliever. Taking an oral anti-inflammatory about an hour before waxing will not only keep the skin from swelling, but it will also alleviate some of the pain associated with waxing. This is optional and at your discretion. Some salons also sell topical pain relievers that you can spray or rub onto the skin. These take a minimum of 15 minutes to start working. If they are oily at all, you will need to cleanse your skin again before waxing.

4. Stay out of the sun 24 hours before and after your waxing service.

5. Moisturize your skin again after waxing and avoid sun. Freshly waxed skin burns more easily.

Till next time,
Rosie

Rosie Says: Retinol Is The Name Of The Game

This month’s featured product, Retinol, is the superstar among a multitude of anti-aging skin-care products on the market. Dermatologists, plastic surgeons and aestheticians alike agree that this miracle product has the power to make your skin look younger.
A derivative of vitamin A, it has proven to be an effective and powerful options for treating skin issues. By promoting faster skin cell turnover and preventing the buildup of dead cells in the skin's pores and follicles, it then promotes the growth of healthy cells.  "Retinols hamper the breakdown of collagen and thicken the deeper layer of skin where wrinkles get their start," dermatologist Carolyn Jacob, MD says.

For brown spots that give the skin an uneven tone, retinols slough them off and curb the production of melanin, a darker pigment.
PCA has several retinols to offer. You can choose which one to use based on the overall goal you may have.

Intensive Brightening Treatment: 0.5% Pure Retinol Night
This advanced formulation delivers potent ingredients deep into the skin helping to produce radiance from within, while promoting an even skin tone. Additional actives smooth the skin’s surface, while minimizing redness and the yellowing of the complexion. An overall glow and even skin tone is the outcome with nightly use of this new, breakthrough retinol formulation.

Intensive Age Refining Treatment®: 0.5% pure retinol night
This nighttime treatment formulation combines 0.5% pure retinol paired with antioxidants and a host of beneficial ingredients to hydrate and soothe, while minimizing the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.

Intensive Clarity Treatment®: 0.5% pure retinol night
This nighttime treatment formulation pairs 0.5% pure retinol to promote an even skin tone and a clear complexion.

Your next step is to combine the use of an at home Retinol with a PCA facial treatment that includes a retinoid added in and you are on the path to younger, firmer and overall healthier skin.
